As he looked in the mirror and straightened his fake goatee he also practiced the easy smile that he had become accustomed to flashing. He reached for the brightly colored shirt, donned it and buttoned it up while practicing the greetings he’d also been going over relentlessly for months. Last the large dark sunglasses to cover his eyes. Perfect! He thought to himself. . . . Could I be any more Mexican??
As he departed the cab he made sure to tip the driver and as he smiled to himself he thought even that guy wouldn’t know where I was from and he has the same blood as me. As he went through the security line he noticed the young woman who was complaining about her formula bottle being emptied. He also couldn’t help but overhear the woman who was pushing her husband in a wheelchair saying how much she hated flying since 9/11. He wasn’t asked to remove his sun glasses or questioned in any way whatsoever. In fact all of the “random” searches seemed to be performed on airline personnel or people flying on “buddy passes” that they received from airline workers.
As he moved thru the terminal with his bag he stopped at a kiosk filled with fruit, nuts and candy. As he approached the register with the two bags of gummy worms the slightly built, dark man behind the counter said “Forgive me sir but those are stale. I was just about to replace them. Here take these.” And he hands him two bags from under the counter. “Something to drink today, Sir?” He asks. “Yeah sure give me a bottle of water.” The traveler replies. As he pays the merchant the man leans slightly forward and quietly says “The prophet has spoken and the time is upon us.” The traveler smiles as he pulls his hand out from under the merchants and replies “Yes it is. It is a great day.”
The gummy worms contain a concentrated, quick acting explosive and the catalyst is contained in the 12 oz. bottle of water. Once they are securely in his bag the traveler heads to the men’s room where he spends the next 20 minutes praying in a stall. After that he exits and walks toward the gate where he takes a seat and waits for the plane to board.
After a time a young pilot deadheading back to Washington DC sits down beside him and opens up his laptop. He has no time for small talk with the traveler, as he is behind on his training as a new pilot with the airline and badly wants to finish up the last computer base training module he has left which is titled “The Effects and Causes of Profiling on Our Customer Base.”
